💲Why make your own oat flour?
For illustrative purposes, I’m using links to the products below to breakdown the price comparison.
1 Bag of Oats is twice the size of 1 bag of Oat Flour, so you would have to buy 2 bags of Oat Flour to get the same amount which costs $8.78. You save $2.49 (~28%) by buying the Oats and blending yourself.
Oat Flour: $4.39/ 16oz
Oats: $6.29/32 oz
Oat Flour Ingredients:
Favorite brand of Oats (I like Bob’s Red Mill quick cooking)
Tip: 1 cup of quick-cooking or old-fashioned oats blends to slightly more then 1 cup of oat flour
Directions:
Place desired amount of oats in the high-powered blender.
Blend for anywhere from 20 seconds to 1 minute.
You want the flour to be thin and powdery without a sandy coarseness.
Yup, it’s that easy!
TIP: Make more then you need, and store extra flour in an airtight container for up to three months.
Is it Gluten-free?:
If you are gluten-free, or gluten-intolerant, read the packaging carefully to make sure that the oats are certified gluten-free. Otherwise, oats could be cross-contaminated within the factory. Keep in mind that even if the oats are gluten-free, some people with Celia Disease are allergic to the protein in oats, called avenin.
Put that oat flour to good use:
Make waffles, or as like my son likes to call them “falafels.” We’re big fans of this one by Registered Dietician, and plant-based expert, Whitney English. We like to top his waffles with a schmear of peanut butter, a dollop of Cocojune yogurt (for a whipped cream effect) and a drizzle of maple syrup.
