are you ready to smile?

Imagine if we lived our lives on the precipice of a smile, we would be surprised by how many things push us over the edge.  A simple, conscious choice to shift our outlook,  can have a powerful effect on our day and our overall well-being.

Over the weekend I went hiking with my family. By the time we left the house it was already pushing too close to dinner time, and the trail was full of uncovered roots, half-buried rocks, dirt and sticks. My two-year-old wanted to run the entire time. I, of course, was nervous that he would fall and get hurt. And I kept thinking about dinner.

Despite my worries, I managed to keep my mouth shut… most of the time. Once in a while, I would tell him to watch for a cluster of rocks or a large root poking from the ground. Without fail, both times I said something, he over thought it, and took a slow tumble. After Logan fell the second time, I decided to quit worrying about the possibility of him falling, or about dinner, and instead, decided to join in on the fun.

And you know what happened?

I felt my insides sparkle every time Logan would tell me to run and say “ready, set, go,” or declare “I am speed,” after his favorite character, Lightning McQueen.

What we pay attention to grows, and if we are looking for something bad to happen, it most likely will. But if we look for the good, for small joys to delight and make us smile, we will find them.
